Indian Leap in the White Mountains by Rick Bolger
Called "Lover's Leap" these days by the politically correct (which I regret I am not), Indian Leap is located behind a popular restaurant west of Lincoln, NH on the road to Lost River and Kinsman Notch.
It is a large but delicate granite promontory that juts out over a noisy cascade on the Lost River. Judging from the carving and positioning of the rock on the opposite side, one might conclude that Indian Leap was a natural bridge formed by the river, and eventually brought down by the river, leaving only the "leap" as we see it today. Regardless of the specifics, it was indeed formed largely by the workings of the river.
The photos below show Sandy standing on top of the promontory; that photo was taken from the bridge seen in the lower photo. The lower photo was taken from a spot not visible in the closeup, but at the same level as the river seen in the top photo.
If you would like to visit Indian Leap, it is recommended that you do so either in the morning or early afternoon, unless you are dining at the restaurant. The restaurant provides free parking prior to the late afternoon, and you are welcome to stop and see the sights. There are plenty of trails leading above and below Indian Leap, which provide an excellent glimpse of the geological power of the streams in the White Mountains. Photos below....
