Crawford Notch Zoo

The original zoo at Crawford Notch State Park.

The structure directly across the pond from these people is one of the original zoo enclosures at Crawford Notch State Park. At right are people standing on an arched wooden bridge that went across the spillway. It appears that some of the people have stopped and are leaning over, looking at the fish in the pond. This was part of the experience. After the wooden bridge you walked along a concrete dam, and finally, the zoo. Every time I visit I try to find out specifically when the zoo closed, and the park rangers all say "oh, a
long
time ago.  You remember that, huh?"  The last time I visited, a rather youthful park ranger said "I believe there used to be a zoo here, yes, but that was many many years ago."  I didn't bother to ask him if it got squashed along with the Wileys.

Things change, time marches on, but I don't have to like it.

If you have any photos of the zoo, I would like to expand this page.  Please e-mail me at rickbolger@yahoo.com
